Lost your Aadhaar card? Here are 5 crucial steps to prevent fraud and misuse

Losing your Aadhaar card can be a significant concern, given its critical role as an essential identification document in India. Not only does it serve as a unique ID with a 12-digit number, but it is also linked to various services like bank accounts, phone numbers, PAN, and other financial instruments. This interconnectedness makes it imperative to take immediate steps to protect your identity and prevent any potential misuse if your Aadhaar card is lost or misplaced.

Steps to Take If You Lose Your Aadhaar Card:

  1. Register an FIR
The first step when you lose an important document like your Aadhaar card is to file a First Information Report (FIR) at your nearest police station. Alternatively, you can file the FIR online through the respective state’s police website. This legal step provides a formal record of your loss, which can protect you against any fraudulent activities that may arise from the misuse of your Aadhaar details. Below is a list of official state websites for filing an FIR:

  2. Lock Your Aadhaar
Once you’ve reported the loss, the next critical step is to lock your Aadhaar number, also known as UID. Locking your Aadhaar prevents any unauthorized use, including biometric authentication or demographic updates using your UID. You can do this via the UIDAI website or through the mAadhaar app. Alternatively, you can lock your Aadhaar by sending an SMS. To do this:

    • Send OTP request: Text GETOTP followed by the last 4 or 8 digits of your Aadhaar number to the designated UIDAI number.
    • Send Locking Request: Text LOCKUID followed by the last 4 or 8 digits of your Aadhaar number and the 6-digit OTP you received.
  3. Lock Aadhaar Biometrics
Locking your Aadhaar biometrics is an additional measure that can prevent the misuse of your personal information. This process ensures that your biometric details—such as fingerprints and iris scans—cannot be used for authentication or other purposes.

    • Visit the UIDAI website.
    • Select "Lock/Unlock Biometrics."
    • Enter your Aadhaar number and Captcha code.
    • Click on “Send OTP” and enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number.
    • Enable the “Locking feature” to secure your biometrics. To unlock, repeat these steps and select “Disable locking feature.”
  4. Use Digital Aadhaar or mAadhaar App
Consider switching to a digital version of your Aadhaar to minimize the risk of losing your physical card again. The mAadhaar app or Digilocker app allows you to securely store your Aadhaar details digitally, giving you full control even if your phone is lost or stolen. These apps ensure that your Aadhaar information is always accessible while also being safe from physical misplacement.

  5. Reprint Physical Copy of Aadhaar
If you prefer to have a physical copy of your Aadhaar, you can request a reprint from UIDAI. The process is straightforward:

    • Visit www.uidai.gov.in on your PC browser.
    • Go to the 'Aadhaar Services' section and choose 'Order Aadhaar Reprint.'
    • Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number or 16-digit Virtual Identification Number (VID) and the Captcha code.
    • If your mobile number is registered, select 'Send OTP.' If not, check the box indicating your mobile number isn’t registered and proceed.
    • After verifying the OTP, click 'Make Payment.'
    • Upon successful payment, a confirmation will appear, and you’ll receive a message with a Service Request Number (SRN) to track the reprint status.

Taking these proactive steps will help ensure that your Aadhaar information remains secure and that you minimize the risk of identity theft or fraud. By acting quickly and following these guidelines, you can protect your personal information and maintain control over your Aadhaar-linked services.
